The cats were a big help! They did most of the heavy lifting making for a smooth month of packing before the big move!
Before we even got a chance to drive down to Dallas, we got a call our stuff had been in an accident. They couldn’t give any details about the state of our belonging or the severity of the accident. All we knew is there were no other cars involved and the driver was ok.
It was another week before we were told our delivery was considered a “total loss” meaning 75% or more was destroyed. Naturally, I (Iris) took the rest of the day off work to mourn and panic buy random stuff from Costco.
Originally they just wanted to give us our payout and torch the rest of our stuff, but as you might guess, things like clothes, blankets, etc should be fine. We eventually convinced them to bring up any boxes that didn’t seem to mauled (advocate for yourselves people!).
In the end, we lost all our furniture, (we’re keeping exactly three (3) furniture items from the old place) but thankfully most of our small stuff actually survived somehow. See below for the giant mirror that made it home basically perfect.
As you might imagine, a good chunk of our time spent in Dallas has been spent thinking about redecorating. We made a master plan, laying out budgets and high/low priced items to slowly create a new, beautiful home together.
While we wouldn’t call this whole incident a blessing, I think we’ve made the most of it. As I’m writing this (July 5th) we’re still waiting on key furniture pieces to come in for the living room, the place is already looking way cooler and more “grown up” than our last place.
When you come visit us in Dallas, know that this home was perfectly custom built for us. There are no ghosts or hand-me-downs, just a representation of our new life together.
